Creating & Managing Maps
Learn how to create, configure, and manage your Game Maker maps from start to finish.
Everything in Game Maker starts with a map. A map is your personal, instanced world where you have full control to build your game. This guide covers how to create, configure, and manage your maps.
Creating a New Map
You can manage all your maps through the Your Maps menu, which is your central hub for all your creations.
- Type
/yourmapsto open the menu. - Click the "Create Map" item (Chest).
- You'll be guided through the creation process:
- Name: Give your map a unique and descriptive name. You can use color codes!
- Description: Write a short summary of your game that players will see in the map browser.
- Size: Choose the dimensions of your map. Larger sizes are available to players with higher ranks like MAKER+.
- Template (Optional): You can start from a pre-made template map instead of a blank slate. This requires VOTER rank or higher.
Once created, you'll be automatically teleported into your new map in Build Mode.
The Map Edit Menu (/editmap)
When you're in your map in Build Mode, you can access all the configuration tools through the Map Menu item in your hotbar (Nether Star) or by typing /editmap.
This menu is your control panel for everything, including:
- Info: Change your map's name, icon, size, visibility, and other core settings.
- Regions: Define specific areas in your map to trigger events.
- Properties: Create variables to store game data like score or lives.
- Functions: Build reusable sets of actions to keep your logic clean.
- And much more!
Map Info and Settings
In the /editmap menu, click on the "Info" (Book) item to configure your map's core settings.
- Name, Description, Icon: These are displayed to other players in the map browser. A good icon and name can attract more players!
- Visibility: Control who can see and join your map.
PRIVATE: Only you and players you invite can join. Perfect for testing.PUBLIC: Anyone can find and join your map from the Discover menu.
- Spawn: Set the default spawn point for players entering your map. Click this option to set the spawn to your current location and orientation.
- Resize: Change the size of your map. Note that you can only upgrade to a larger size, you cannot shrink a map.
- Minimum Version: Set the minimum Minecraft version required to play your map. This is useful if your map uses blocks or features from newer updates, preventing issues for players on older clients.
- Template: If you have SMOD rank, you can mark your map as a server template for others to use. This is irreversible.
Deleting and Restoring Maps
Need to clean up your map list? You can delete maps from the Danger section in the /editmap menu.
- Trashing a Map: Deleting a map moves it to your Trash. It will remain there for a period of time based on your rank before being permanently deleted (e.g., 7 days for default rank, 30 days for Maker+).
- Restoring a Map: You can restore a trashed map before it's permanently deleted. Go to
/yourmaps-> Utilities (Clock) -> Trash, and click the map you want to restore.
